Ramp Up for the Busy Season

The growing season has begun across the country, and many of you are in the full swing of things. The good news? It is still early, and there are a lot of things you can do to improve your business functions this year.
Below are a few things that I do to “ramp up” for busy season, so that I can be best prepared to have a year that I can be proud of.
Have a planning and discovery time
If you aren’t dreaming and thinking about both the past and present, you’ll have a hard time seeing the future. I take a day or two before we get insanely busy to write out our strategic plan, marketing strategy, and areas for growth and improvement. It is never too late to do this, so take a half day, and ask yourself a couple questions like: “What do I want this company to look like in 6-12 months, and what would make my family proud at the end of this year?”
Another question I ask myself is, “What do we want to be, who do I want to become during it, and how do I want that to happen?”
Asking yourself introspective questions helps you pull out the best, worst, and most fresh ideas and emotions from within. The green industry can be brutal. I have always heard, “It’s simple, but difficult.” Without having some discovery time, you’ll feel like you’re running a marathon with no finish line. That’s not a fun, or healthy place to be. It leads to burnout and anxiety. I don’t want that for you, and neither do you. Let’s do something about it.
Have gas in the cash flow tank
This one is simple, but make sure you are setting yourself up for a steady and consistent cash flow. A silly phrase I say to myself all the time is, “You can have a Ferrari, but it can’t go anywhere without gas.” You could have a great business, with a lot of leads, employees, and a stellar facility. But if you don’t have cash flow, and people owe you too often, you may run out of “gas” before you can truly set sail. Never let that happen. Have at least 45-60 days’ worth of cash in the bank so you can operate without having to worry about a check hitting the account on Friday before the weekend.
I hope these two things help you ramp up for this growing season better than you ever have before. Here’s to crushing it, and making your dreams become reality.
